Dussehra 2023: From epic dramas to heartwarming tales, these films bring the festival to life on the silver screen.

Dussehra or Vijayadashami is celebrated by Hindus at the close of the Navaratri festival every year. Dussehra refers to the tenth and final day of Durga Puja. It is the day which celebrates the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana. After killing Ravana, Rama is said to have worshipped goddess Durga on the tenth day of the Hindu month of Ashvin, which falls on October 24, this year. Shared below are ten Bollywood movies which feature Dussehra celebrations.

Prem Granth (1996)

Starring Rishi Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit in the lead, this Bollywood adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles depicts a scene featuring Dussehra at the climax of the film. Kajri (Madhuri Dixit) ties her rapist to an effigy of Ravan and burns him to death.

Swades: We the People (2004)

One of the best patriotic Indian films ever made, Swades, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, is also considered to be one of Shah Rukh Khan’s finest performances. The film features a fantastic depiction of Lord Ram’s victory over Ravana via a folk theatre performance.

Delhi 6 (2009)

The Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra film is about reconnecting with roots, religious tensions, and also about the evil hiding inside us. The theme of Dussehra permeates the film and the main character makes references to it. The song Ram Leela also depicts Dussehra in the film.

Ra.One (2011)

The Anubhav Sinha sci-fi movie sees actor Arjun Rampal play a virtual reality villain called Ra.One; an obvious riff on Raavan. There’s a scene where Ra. One appears to watch an effigy of Ravan burn during Dussehra and tell a group of children that Raavan never dies.

Kahaani (2012)

In the film’s climax, which takes place during Vijayadashami in West Bengal, Vidya (Vidya Balan) kills the murderer of her husband while the camera shows her disappear in a crowd celebrating Durga’s return to her abode after Mahishasura.

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013)

The climax of this lavish Indian adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet also takes place during Dussehra celebrations. Fearing that the two earring clans, the Rajadis and the Saneras will wipe each other out, Raam and Leela commit suicide together.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)

The super-hit Salman Khan movie is a movie about humanity and its fight to protect innocence from evil. The song Tu Chahiye, performed by Atif Aslam, depicts a Ramlila celebration on Dussehra and a child dressed as Ram setting fire to an effigy of Raavan.

Marjaavaan (2019)

Marjaavan is a revenge action drama that also features Dussehra. Raghu Sidharth Malhotra) who was forced to kill Zoya (Tara Sutaria), the love of his life, exacts revenge by killing the villain, named Vishnu (Riteish Deshmukh) during Dussehra by burning him to death.

Kalank (2019)

Kalank Is a lavish period romantic drama that features a lavish celebration of Dussehra during the song ‘Ghar More Pardesiya.’ The song depicts Roop meeting Zafar on the steps of a river bank, with a Ravan effigy burning in the background.

Brahmāstra (2022)

Brahmāstra too depicts Dussehra through a song but features it far more prominently. The energetic song, Dance Ka Bhoot, performed by Arijit Singh, shows Shiva dancing during Dussehra celebrations, with the song ending when the effigy of Ravan is set on fire.
