New Delhi: News18.com on Monday held its 'Tech and Auto Awards' in a glittering ceremony in New Delhi in the presence of industry stalwarts and politicians to celebrate technology and automotive products that have excelled in their respective sectors.
India's first and only Technology and Automotive Awards saw brands such as Maruti, Toyota, Volvo and Audi among others battle it out for coveted titles such as Luxury Car of the Year, Design of the Year, Hatchback of the Year etc. On the other hand, tech giants such as Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Honor and others were seen fighting it out for awards in the Smartphone of the Year, Design of the Year and other categories.
While the Apple iPhone XS Max won the Smartphone Of The Year, QKopy was honoured for Technology That Changed Lives. Huawei P20 Pro won in the Best Camera Phone Of The Year category and Redmi Note5 Pro defeated the other giants to win Budget Phone Of The Year. The Gadget Of The Year went to Sony Bravia A9F OLED TV, while Design Of The Year was claimed by Dyson V10 Cyclone Vaccum Cleaner. In the Computing Device Of The Year category, HP Spectre emerged the clear favourite.
Moving to the automobile category, Ducati Panigale won the Motorcycle Of The Year, while Audi RS5 won Design Of The Year. Hyundai Santro was crowned the Hatchback Of The Year, while Volvo XC60 won the Luxury Car Of The Year. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza won in the SUV/MPV Of The Year category, while Honda Amaze won the Sedan of The Year. The TVS Ntorq was declared the favourite in the Commuter Two Wheeler Of The Year.
The keynote speaker of the evening was Mamatha Chamarthi, Chief Digital Officer of ZF Friedrichshafen — one of the largest automobile component manufacturers in the world.
Among the dignitaries who attended the event were Union road transport and shipping minister Nitin Gadkari and communications minister Manoj Sinha. Gadkari, while addressing the gathering, said India was not ready for driverless cars as there were 30 lakh people looking for jobs. “Currently, as a progressing country we need to take care of that. However, if someone can convince me otherwise I am open to discussion,” he said. Gadkari added the need of the hour was electric vehicles that are less polluting and more energy-efficient than cars running on conventional fossil fuels. He also said the government was making 12 expressways, including one that would go straight from Delhi to Jaipur and cross the backward areas of Rajasthan.
Sinha said the country had missed the 3G and 4G bus but “I don't think we will miss the 5G bus”. He also said the government had managed to remove the trust deficit in the last four-and-a-half years.
