The proposed Bamboo Bazar Metro Station, being constructed by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) will have complete bamboo decor, a first for Indian Metro stations.
According to Punati Shridhar, Chairman of the Bamboo Society of India (BSI), and former Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, the BMRCL had agreed to their request to create a theme-based station using bamboo. Additionally, native and Indian bamboo will be used to green the medians beneath the metro rails and stations, reported The New Indian Express.
Dr KN Murthy, Executive Director, BSI, told The New Indian Express, that Bambusa tulda wood from Tripura will be utilized for the metro station where the landscape, open area and crafts will also be done with bamboo. In addition, the 5 km section of Bannerghatta Road between Jayadeva Hospital and Meenakshi Temple, below the metro rails and stations, will be developed with the Bambusa multiplex.
The construction work for both projects will begin in the next three months and will expectedly cost Rs 5-6 crore. However, the final cost estimates and bamboo requirements are still being determined. The BMCL will use its corporate social responsibility funds to finance the development of the metro stations and the greening of the medians.
The BSI Chairman, Shridhar, also emphasized the fact that, although India has the world’s largest bamboo cultivation area of 13.9 million hectares, still it is China, with only seven million hectares, that produces the most with 150 million tonnes. On the other hand, India produces 4.6 million hectares. Therefore, India needs to use more of its own Bamboo for construction, as the increase in consumption and demand may raise the Bamboo production in the country.
Apart from this, a metro station in Mumbai is being planned to be made out of Bamboo. Also, notably, the interiors of Terminal 2 of Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru and the walls and floors of the new Parliament residence in New Delhi, are made with Bamboo.
Meanwhile, talking about the Bengaluru Metro, recently the BMRCL has been given a green signal for its Phase 3 construction by the Union Government. The Phase 3 project of the Bengaluru Metro will be 44.65 km long and will feature two new lines: JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura and Hosahalli to Kadabagere.
