The Honda City mid-size sedan has always been the most successful product for Honda Cars India., The recent numbers divulged by Honda make it interesting to understand the Honda City sales so far in India and across the globe.
According to the report, Honda City has managed to attract 6.8 lakh buyers in India since its debut in the country. Out of the total sales, the fourth generation Honda City, which was introduced in January 2014 got a cumulative sales 2.5 lakh units in the country till June 2017.
Honda City, which is sold in 60 countries around the world has sold 3.5 million units of the sedan globally, of which 1 million units are of the fourth generation model. The sedan is currently manufactured in five locations - India, China, Thailand, Brazil and Japan.
In India, Honda City was first launched in 1998 and has attracted 6.8 lakh buyers till now. That’s a 20% volume of the total global sales, showing how big the car is for Honda in India. Out of 6.8 lakh, 2.5 lakh are the 4th gen City, meaning 355 of the total sales in India is of the fourth gen City. That’s also a 25% volume of the total global sales.
The 1st gen City sold only 59,378 units, but the figure increased two-fold to 1,77,742 units for the second gen City, followed by 1,92,939 units of the third generation model and then 2,50,274 units within 30 months for the fourth gen model.
Out of the total sales in India, 61% are of petrol model and 70% are manual Citys. North, West and South contributed to 90% of the sales. The fourth-gen Honda City received a facelift in February and is currently available in 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol 5-MT (17.4 km/l), 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol CVT (18 km/l) and 1.5-litre i-DTEC 6-MT (25.6 km/l) configurations.
The 2017 Honda City price starts for Rs 8,72,797 (ex-showroom Delhi) for the petrol model and at Rs 10,90,513 (ex-showroom Delhi) for the diesel model.
