To offer seamless rapid local transport service in the city, Kochi is likely to get light trams for the commuters soon. It has been reported by The Hindu that Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is expected to meet the officials that deal with the light trams and discuss the plan about the same.
It has been reported that the planned light trams will transform the overall commute service. It will take less land acquisition and requires less money compared to traditional metro.
Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP)
This project has received the limelight at a time when KMRL is waiting for a Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the city to spread the roots for the metro neo. The project was suggested for the 4-km MG Road-Menaka-Park Avenue Road-Hospital Road-MG Road loop line.
Running Routes
Reports suggested that the planned light trams will resemble the metro coaches that will be operated on the road. These trams are likely to run in Brisbane, among other places. However, it is yet to be confirmed by the officials whether these trams will be operated outside of the city in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode or not.
Benefits
If everything goes well, the project will serve as the extra link to the Kochi metro, improving metro service on Aluva, MG Road, and Tripurutha phase 1 corridor. Apart from this, the line will also link the metro to Water Metro ferries that run out of the High Court terminal.
