To make it more advanced and improve the operation at Savarkar International Airport, the authority is gearing up to set up an advanced Runway Lighting System (RLS) and Instrument Landing System (ILS). This will help the aircraft to perform safe operations at night, and will help them make safe landings on the runway during bad weather conditions.
The news has been confirmed by the Airport Director, Devender Yadav. While speaking with PTI, he informed that the Doppler Very High-Frequency Omni Range (DVOR), a short or medium-range radio navigation system, has been in operation since January 19. It will help the aircraft to set up their directions and positions using VHF signals.

PTI also quoted the airport director, who said, “For the implementation of Instrumental Landing System (ILS), the installation, calibration and procedure design work of glide path and Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) has already been completed and it will be operational soon”.
In addition, he also said, “This will help in more flight operations with competitive airfare and contribute to more tourist inflow in this beautiful island.” It will also minimize flight diversions due to rough weather conditions, the airport director added.
AAI in Close Contact with Navy
It has been reported that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been in close coordination with the Navy, and is planning to finish the ILS system by February 15, while the RLS is expected completed by the end of March.
