New Delhi: The Commonwealth Games to be staged in the Capital in 2010 will get a Rs 500-crore boost, Finance Minster P Chidambaram announced while presenting the Union Budget on Wednesday.
The Centre will give Rs 350 crore and Rs 150 crore to the Delhi government and the Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry respectively, in a bid to keep the progress in check and for organising the event.
An additional Rs 50 crore will be set aside for the Commonwealth Youth Games set to take place in Pune next year, Chidambaram added.
An allocation of Rs 780 crore has been made for the Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry, a Rs 111-crore increase from 2005-06. The initial allocation of Rs 699 crore for 2005-06 was later revised to Rs 573.77 crore.
Rs 700 crore has been earmarked for plan expenditure, while Rs 80 crore has been kept for non-plan expenditure.
Training facilities in the country may also see a rise with Rs 62 crore kept aside for the purpose, including equipment and medical facilities, while coaching staff and referees will also look to benefit from it.
The Sports Authority of India has also been extended financial assistance to coaching clinics, national teams and bringing in foreign support.
Prestigious awards for excellence in sports like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and the Arjuna Awards also saw a rise, with Rs 3 crore being set aside for it.
