The project, estimated to cost about Rs 77,000 crore, includes interlinking of the two routes at Khurja in Uttar Pradesh.

New Delhi: Indian Railways will award contract for construction of about 1,000 route km on eastern and western dedicated freight corridors (DFCs) in the next fiscal, Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi said on Wednesday.

"It is expected that the contract for civil and track works for about 1,000 route kilometres on Eastern and Western DFCs would be awarded during 2012-13," Trivedi said while presenting the Railway Budget for 2012-13.

The Railways has taken up the project of constructing DFCs from Ludhiana to Dankuni and another from Dadri to Jawaharlal Nehru Port for efficient freight transportation to and from ports and to facilitate decongestion.

This is one of the biggest infrastructure projects under execution spread over 3,300 km, covering eastern, northern and western part of the country, Trivedi added.

"Funding assistance from World Bank and JICA has been tied up. A total of 6,500 hectares of land, out of 10,700 hectares required, has been acquired so far. The bidding process for the civil and track works has commenced," he said.

In 2005, the Ministry of Railways had announced the plan to build dedicated corridor for its freight movement on two routes.

While the Eastern Corridor was proposed from Ludhiana to Dankuni, the Western Corridor was to be constructed from Jawahar Lal Nehru Port, at Nhava Sheva near Mumbai to Tughlakabad, Delhi/Dadri.

The project, estimated to cost about Rs 77,000 crore, includes interlinking of the two routes at Khurja in Uttar Pradesh.
