In the Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, agriculture constitutes 75 percent of the occupation in particular. Most of the people living in the district indulge in the cultivation of paddy crops. Farmers, here, opt for natural ways for the cultivation of rice crops that yield them good results along with huge profits. Among these farmers is a 68-year-old woman, who hails from Chittanur village. After doing artificial farming for 45 years, the woman has now decided to venture into organic farming. The woman named Geetha was indulged in farming for more than four decades. She completed her graduation in BA Economics. After the death of her husband, she has been engaged in agriculture as a full-time occupation. It was after someone’s advice that the woman’s interest in organic farming developed, following which she also cultivated a variety of paddy called Seerga Samba naturally.
Speaking about the paddy cultivation method to the Local 18 team, Geetha said, “I have been farming for 45 years, but now I have cultivated paddy for organic farming. It does not matter if there is no profit as the naturally grown rice is harmless which is more important. I am growing rice naturally with the idea of eating healthy food.”
She added, “I have used all types of natural fertilisers I know like nectar solution, neem oil solution, punnaku etc. for cumin samba paddy. After consulting other farmers about my doubts, I have begun cultivating rice by following natural methods. At present, all the rice fields are growing well and I am hoping to get a good yield and profit.”
Geetha is now appealing to other farmers as well that they should practise organic farming as much as possible and highlighted that it is healthier in comparison to the crops grown using artificial methods.
