Chennai: The recent terror attacks have made the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai a tough fortress. Under the watch of 3000 policemen, the English cricket team will play under the shadow of terror and this is not something the English cricketers are used to.
As a former Tamil Nadu state player, the M.A.Chidambaram stadium is virtually a second home for Aditya Ganesh but on Wednesday he can only get as far as the stadium gates. The unprecedented security means he can’t watch the cricketers practice or get that chance handshake or an autograph. He’s disappointed but he’s glad that at least the game’s not stopped by terror.
“It is disappointing. I have been inside a lot of times but I was not allowed today but I have taken it in the right spirit,” said Ganesh.
The English cricket team’s convoy reminds most of a Prime Minister or President’s convoy with escort cars, black cat commandos and a security cover like never before.
These are the security measures which have been taken in Chennai for the Test:
— 3000 cops including 750 commandos guarding the stadium.
— 20 Black Cat commandos always with the teams.
— 300 commandos at the hotels.
“We have ensured complete security around the ground. During all the five days of the match, all spectators will be frisked and no mobile phones or bags or even water bottles will be allowed inside,” said R.Ganeshamoorthy; Deputy Commissioner, Chennai Police.
Cricket is under a cloud of fear from terror and the M.A.Chidambaram stadium is now virtually a fortress. It’s a historic cricket ground that’s now perhaps is symbolic of a message that goes beyond the cricket field; no matter how terror strikes, the game will go on.”
