Andre Russell seems quite excited to feature in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, slated to be hosted by the West Indies and the United States next year. Sharing his plans for the showpiece event, a confident Russell has said that he will be looking like a UFC fighter when the campaign begins in June.
The veteran all-rounder has recently made a roaring comeback to West Indies’ T20I set-up. Russell had remained out of international cricket for two years since featuring in the 2021 T20 World Cup. He was called up for the recently concluded T20I home series against England where West Indies registered a 3-2 victory by winning the decider by 4 wickets on Friday.

Russell was recently featured in an interview on TNT Sports. Apart from shedding light on his preparation for the 2024 T20 World Cup, the cricketer also underlined the importance of the tournament from the team’s perspective after missing out on this year’s ODI World Cup. Russell also spoke about the positive impact of the series win over England, saying it helped him gain a lot of confidence.
“I’ll be in better shape, to be honest: I’ll be looking like a UFC fighter. This series win means so much. It makes me want to push myself to the limit. have a lot of cricket to play and that’s good. When you’re playing cricket and in competition, your body is active and you’re not just sitting at home waiting for the World Cup,” Russell explained, as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo.

Russell was one of the standout performers for West Indies during the five-match campaign. Having played all matches, Russell has folded the series as the leading wicket-taker for the hosts. He was mostly used in the death overs. Russell was also able to showcase his A-game with the bat. The Caribbean power-hitter has racked up a total of 105 runs at a note-worthy strike rate of over 165.
Despite staying out of international cricket, Russell was well involved in the spot, featuring in various franchise T20 competitions across the world. Ahead of the England series, the 35-year-old all-rounder was seen in action at the Abu Dhabi T10 League where his team Deccan Gladiators lost the final to New York Strikers. Before going into the T20 World Cup, Russell is slated to participate in the ILT20 and the IPL.
