Days after retiring from Test cricket and ODIs, David Warner is set to appear for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League Match No. 34, against Sydney Sixers, at his home ground – SCG, on Thursday. The veteran Australian batter is going to steal the show with his entry into the stadium as he plans to fly in a helicopter directly from his brother’s wedding. However, his flight is subject to weather conditions.
Warner will be at his brother’s wedding in the Hunter region and will fly to the SCG via helicopter for the BBL’s Sydney derby.
The match against the Sixers will mark Warner’s return to the BBL. He will play in three games for the Thunder before travelling to the United Arab Emirates to join the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 league.
Since Warner has called it time on his ODI and Test career, he will focus completely on the T20Is in a bid to win Australia another world title later this year. He will take part in the T20I series against West Indies at home, starting February 9, which will be Australia’s last bilateral before the showpiece event in the West.
The veteran Australian batter will play a crucial role for the Thunder, especially in the absence of Tom Curran who was ruled out of the entire due to a knee injury. The English all-rounder will miss the final two group-stage games and potentially his ILT20 commitments as well.
As stated by Sydney Thunder, Sam Konstas has now departed Thunder camp to join Australia’s Under 19s squad for their World Cup in South Africa. Toby Gray remains with the squad as a replacement player.
