As the attention is now diverted to the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 taking place in the West Indies and the United States of America, the former Chairman of Selectors and former Indian international, Dilip Vengsarkar shared his opinion on the current Indian squad that is set to take part in the T20 showpiece event.
Vengsarkar was the chief selector from February 2006 to September 2008. He was present at the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai’s function that took place at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday. He had spoken on a wide range of topics as the Chief Guest and had also revealed his thoughts on the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.
“The current Indian team, I think, is one of the best in the world, I would say. If you could, you know, put a Gill out or Rahul or Rinku Singh out, I’m sure it’s a very strong team. And I wish them all the success. Because, I think, it’s one of the best in the world at the moment”, said Vengsarkar.
The exclusion of Rinku Singh in particular was one that sent shockwaves among the cricketing fraternity as he was demoted to the reserves despite having a stellar record in the shortest format.

Vengsarkar further iterated that in this form of the sport, there is a lot of uncertainty which would allow any team on any given day to beat any opposition if things worked out in their favour.
He commented, “The key players would like to play an important role in this T20 World Cup. It’s very difficult to say in this format because everybody is a very important member of the team. But the thing is that, as you have seen in IPL, the first six were very important. How you give a good start in the first six was very important. And of course, in this format, anything can happen”.

“But I can’t say X, Y or Z is a key player in the team. In this format, anybody can win the match at any time of the match,” he added.
Now the Indian team are currently training ahead of their opening clash against Ireland that takes place on June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York and their quest for silverware continues.
