World No. 1 Test all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will be a key player for India in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, which starts on Thursday (September 19) in Chennai. During the series opener, which is scheduled to take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, 35-year-old Jadeja, who is almost certain to get picked in the playing XI despite Axar Patel’s rise, will have a chance to join legendary Kapil Dev and Ravichandran Ashwin in an elite list.
Jadeja, who has 294 wickets to his name in 72 Tests played so far since his debut against England in Nagpur on December 13, 2012, needs six wickets to complete 300 dismissals in Test cricket. If he manages to do so, he will become the seventh Indian bowler after Kapil, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ashwin, and Ishant Sharma to achieve the feat.
Most wickets for India in Tests
- Anil Kumble – 619
- Ravichandran Ashwin – 516
- Kapil Dev – 434
- Harbhajan Singh – 417
- Zaheer Khan – 311
- Ishant Sharma – 311
- Ravindra Jadeja – 294
- Bishan Singh Bedi – 266
300 wickets in Test cricket will also help Jadeja become only the third Indian cricketer after Kapil and Ashwin to complete a double of 3000 runs and 300 wickets in the five-day format of the game.
Kapil, who led India to the 1983 World Cup title, finished his career with 434 wickets and 5248 runs in 131 Tests, whereas Ashwin has managed to dismiss 516 batters in addition to scoring 3309 runs in 100 Tests played so far.
Jadeja, who missed the last Test series for India against Bangladesh in December 2022, has scored 3036 runs in 105 innings of 72 Tests apart from having 294 wickets to his name.
It was reported by PTI on Monday that Kuldeep Yadav is also likely to play ahead of Axar in the first Test against Bangladesh, and if the Kanpur-based cricketer gets a chance, then he will have an opportunity to complete 300 wickets for India in international cricket.
The 29-year-old spinner, who first played for India at the highest level on March 25, 2017, against Australia during a Test match at HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, has managed to dismiss 294 batters in 158 matches played so far across formats. He has 53, 172, and 69 wickets to his name in 12 Tests, 106 ODIs, and 40 T20Is played so far.
