T20 World Cup: India, Canada Share Points After Match Called Off Due to Wet Outfield
India's final Group A fixture against Canada turned into a damp squib with match abandoned due to wet outfield.

India and Canada will have to wait for some more time before squaring off at the international level after their 2024 T20 World Cup Group A match in Florida was called-off due to a wet outfield on Saturday. The teams received a point each as a result of the abandoned game slated to be held at the  Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill,.

The toss for the inconsequential contest was delayed by half-an-hour before the match officials conducted their first inspection (8 PM IST) which gave way to another one an hour later. While the rain stayed away, there were several damp patches on the outfield which needed to be dried to ensure the surface was firm.

The groundstaff kept working on the wet patches but after their second inspection at 9 PM IST, they concluded conditions aren’t suitable for the match to go ahead and it was called off without toss.

India thus finish the first round with seven points from four matches. They defeated Ireland, Pakistan and USA to qualify for the Super Eight stage before their fourth and final match ended in a no result.

On the other hand, Canada will be disappointed at having lost a chance to test themselves against a high-quality side like India. They had given a good account of themselves by securing an upset win over Ireland after starting their campaign with a defeat to USA in a high-scoring contest.

They then give a tough fight to Pakistan before suffering their second defeat. With three points, they ae currently third in Group A.

The final Group A match will also be played at the same venue between Pakistan and Ireland. Both Pakistan and Ireland have been eliminated from the Super Eight contention with USA joining India as the second team to qualify.

The Indian team will return to action next week when they take on Afghanistan in their first Super Eight match on June 20.
