The past few months have been a bit chaotic for Pakistan cricket. It’s undergoing a major transition with the appointment of Mohsin Naqvi as the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The board is also on the lookout for new coaches for different formats. And now, 29 Pakistani cricketers are under the direct observation of military personnel at the Army School of Physical Training in Abbottabad, ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.

The two-week camp began on March 25 and will go on till April 8 as new PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi wants the players to prioritise their fitness levels. Meanwhile, all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed took to his Instagram account to share a video in which he and his teammates could be seen carrying heavy rocks on a mountain terrain. The likes of Naseem Shah, Mohammad Rizwan and Ahmed himself can be seen doing those rock-carrying drills under the eagle-eyed supervision of the armed forces.

The players are also seen applauding Pakistan wicketkeeper Azam Khan, who was the last person to complete the training exercise. The cricketers seemed to be extracting some fun out of these exercises in a bid to enhance the team spirit, as they chanted “Azam, Azam” to appreciate his efforts.

The leadership turmoil

After Babar Azam stepped down as captain from all formats following the 2023 World Cup, PCB appointed Shaheen Afridi as the captain of the T20I side. He led Pakistan in five games against New Zealand in January but lost 4-1.

On March 31, the PCB officially announced the reappointment of Babar Azam as the captain in the two white-ball formats, indicating that he will be leading the Men in Green at the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Pakistan are slated to play as many as nine T20Is ahead of the World Cup. They will host New Zealand for five T20Is, starting April 18, before flying to the United Kingdom (UK) to take on England in four T20Is.
