The Directorate of Education (DoE), Delhi released a notice on February 5 and informed that all schools across different categories – government-aided, government, and recognised private schools in Delhi will resume classes as per their usual regular timings from today, February 6. “In view of the improved weather conditions in Delhi, all Govt., Govt. Aided and Recognised Private Schools of Delhi shall resume their full normal timings wef. 06.02.2024 (Tuesday),” reads the official notice.
The order has further directed the Heads of Schools (HoSs) to inform students, parents, and staff about the change in timings well in time via suitable means of communication like mass SMS facility, phone calls, and School Management Committee (SMC). The DoE has decided to resume regular classes for Delhi schools in response to the improved weather conditions.
Earlier, on January 15, when schools resumed after winter break, the Delhi government imposed timing restrictions due to the cold weather. Due to the foggy weather in the national capital, all schools were required to start after 9 am and end by 5 pm. The government is always keeping an eye on the weather and making adjustments as needed.
Due to the severe cold weather, the Directorate of Education had previously extended winter vacations for Delhi schools up to Class 5 until January 12. This decision followed an earlier extended break in November of the previous year, from November 9 to 18, due to concerns about pollution and cold weather.
Delhi Education Minister, Atishi Marlena, had earlier announced that schools would stay closed until January 12, 2024, further extending the winter break. This decision was made in response to the current cold wave in Delhi, as well as the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) yellow alert. It was mandated that classes for students in nursery through class 5 be temporarily suspended for five days in a row during that week. The Delhi minister announced X (formerly Twitter) as a precaution to ensure students’ safety during the current weather conditions.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature in Delhi on February 4 was 20.3 degrees Celsius, slightly lower than the seasonal average, following light morning rainfall.
As per the IMD data, the minimum temperature reached 11.9 degrees Celsius, which is three degrees higher than the seasonal average. Various parts of Delhi received light rain between 5 am and 8 am, totaling 3 mm of rain in the previous 24 hours until 8:30 am. The IMD predicts more rain and moderate fog during the nighttime hours.
