In the government job hierarchy, there are various positions and ranks that are often discussed and terms like BDO and CDO are often heard. They are both administrative positions Although they are two very distinct ranks that cannot be used interchangeably, there is some confusion among people as to which position holds more authority and power. Let us explore both these ranks and compare them accordingly.
BDO is an abbreviation of Block Development Officer while CDO stands for Chief Development Officer. The Block Development Officer (BDO) oversees the planning and implementation of all programs related to the development of the block. The Chief Development Officer (CDO) monitors and coordinates the development of schemes for all the blocks of the district. The CDO thus lies higher in the hierarchy and holds more responsibility as well as authority.
One can become a BDO after passing the PCS examination conducted by the State Public Service Commission. On the other hand, for the post of CDO, one has to pass the Civil Services Examination of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
A government official designated as a Block Development Officer (BDO) is in charge of a block’s development and operations. A key position in the Panchayati Raj system, administrative officers known as BDOs are in charge of planning, developing, and running a certain geographic area. They are also in charge of carrying out all plans pertaining to the block’s development. Members of the block committee are BDOs. They are in charge of making plans and getting in touch with the District Panchayat to request resources and supplies. Every district’s BDO is a member of the District Council, often known as the District Panchayat.
An administrative position in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Bihar is that of chief development officer. It is in charge of managing the state and central governments’ various development plans aimed at reducing poverty and building essential infrastructure. The District Magistrate oversees and controls CDO’s operations. It keeps an eye on every project pertaining to the growth of the block that is under the district’s jurisdiction.
