Meet Rajasthan’s Amrit Jain, The IPS Officer Who Cleared UPSC Exam 4 Times Without Coaching
He finished his B Tech in Electrical Engineering at NIT Warangal.

Clearing the UPSC Civil Services exam is a dream for many. IPS Amrit Jain passed the exam without taking any coaching. He didn’t just pass once or twice but four times that too in a row. Now, he’s serving as an ASP in Aligarh district, Uttar Pradesh. Amrit Jain is from Bhilwara, Rajasthan. He finished his B Tech in Electrical Engineering at NIT Warangal and later studied at Czech Technical University. He began his career at a private company in Hyderabad. His aspiration to take the UPSC Civil Services Exam pushed him to work diligently. Amrit Jain, who comes from a simple family, attempted the UPSC exam for the first time in 2016 without studying beforehand. He says he was too sure of himself, thinking the exam only had multiple-choice questions. He failed the exam.

In 2017, Amrit Jain faced a setback when he missed clearing the UPSC Prelims by just one mark. Determined to improve, Jain, who had not received any coaching for UPSC, improved his study strategy. He sought guidance from various sources to strengthen his understanding of the static portion of the exam. He practised extensively, completing 140 mock tests, each lasting 1 to 1.5 hours.

Amrit highlights the importance of mock tests in becoming familiar with the exam format. During the exam, he remained focused, carefully reading each question at least three times. Jain credits this disciplined approach for his success. For his UPSC exam, Jain had chosen Political Science as his optional subject.

Amrit Jain took the UPSC exams in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. In 2018, he was placed on the reserve list and later joined the Indian Defense Accounts Services. His ranks were 321st in 2019, 96th in 2020, and 179th in 2021.

Despite passing the UPSC exams four times, he didn’t fulfil his dream of becoming an IAS officer. Amrit has no regrets. He recognises that while everyone aims to become an IAS officer when preparing for UPSC, not everyone achieves it. He emphasises the importance of persistent hard work toward achieving one’s goals, believing that success will come eventually.
