London: A sensational 1.5 billion pounds bid for English Premier Leauge club Arsenal is being lined up by a powerful Middle Eastern investment group. The group, made up of investors from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, hope to tempt owner Stan Kroenke with the world record sum, reports the Sunday Telegraph.
It would be the world's biggest ever bid for a football club, surpassing the 800 million pounds paid by the Glazers for Manchester United. But the group warned that Arsenal, currently fifth in the Premier League and four points behind fourth-placed Tottemham Hotspur, must act quickly amid fears that the club miss out on a Champions League place.
They will make their big move to majority shareholder Stan Kroenke in the next few weeks and aim to take Arsenal to the top of world football. The investors will offer Kroenke 20,000 pounds per share for his 66.64 per cent stake in the Gunners.
Uzbek Alisher Usmanov also holds a significant stake and it is believed that Usmanov will not be willing to sell his shareholding, given his 'dream' of taking control of Arsenal himself, but the Middle East consortium believes it will be able to work with the billionaire, who does not currently have a seat on the board.
