London: Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger will launch a 22 million pounds bid for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain this week. Wenger has already met Higuain's father, who also acts as the former River Plate forward's agent, in talks in Paris and a deal appears to be in sight.

In addition to smashing their transfer current transfer record, the 15 million pounds paid to Zenit St Petersburg for Andrey Arshavin, Arsenal are willing to make Higuain their top earner on around £150,000-per-week.

Arsenal explored the possibility of signing the French-born Argentinian in 2006, but Real Madrid beat them to his signature. But Wenger's long wait to work with Higuain now looks set to end this summer.

Wenger is also keen to strengthen his defensive options with speculation rife that Thomas Vermaelen may leave the club. The likes of Swansea City's Ashley Williams and Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel are said to be on Arsenal's radar.
