Rome: AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has admitted that he lost control during Tuesday night's Champions League clash with Tottenham after he headbutted Spurs assistant manager Joe Jordan.

The Italian World Cup winner clashed with Jordan earlier on in the match as a war of words led to Gattuso pushing the former Scotland international in the face.

After the game, which finished 1-0 to Tottenham courtesy of Peter Crouch's goal, Gattuso shook manager Harry Redknapp's hand before headbutting Jordan and confronting Spurs players and staff in the ensuing melee.

In hindsight, however, Gattuso has realised that his behaviour was inexplicable, claiming: "I lost control. There is no excuse for what I have done. I take my responsibilities for that.

"I was nervous. I didn't want to argue with players and I did it with him, but I was wrong to do what I have done."

The fiery midfielder will miss the return leg against Spurs after eventually picking up a yellow card in the match at the San Siro.
