After Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova stepped down due to ill health on Friday, it has been learned that the Catalans giants are in contact with Argentine Gerardo 'Tata' Martino to take over at Nou Camp.
According to reports in Marca.com, Barcelona's sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta, is in Buenos Aires for talks with Gerardo Martino about the vacant manager's position, and he could be officially appointed at some point this week.
The 50-year-old Martino had coached Argentine club Newell's Old Boys last season helping them win the Torneo Final and also taking them to the semi-final of the Copa Libertadores.
Star player and Argentine Lionel Messi too endorsed Martino stating as quoted by The Guardian : "I like Tata Martino. He is a great coach and he gets his teams playing well and we all respect him".
Born in Rosario, 'Tata' has spent the most part of his career in Paraguay where, having coached several clubs with considerable success, he took charge of the national team at the end of 2006.
