The English Football Association’s hunt to find the next man to take over the legacy left behind by Gareth Southgate has been underway for quite some time. For now, Lee Carlsley, the Head Coach of the U21 side, has taken over the role on an interim basis.
But the extended period without a permanent man at the helm indicates that the English FA are looking for the perfect man for the job and take English football to greater heights i.e. the winning kind.
The upcoming cycle, leading up to the FIFA World Cup in 2026 could prove to be the point where England genuinely goes all guns blazing. World-class players like Kyle Walker, John Stones and Harry Kane are in their thirties and this could be their final shot at silverware.
Considering all this, let us take a look at five people who could be in line to be England’s next full-time manager:
5. Kieran McKenna
A more left-field option could be the appointment of Kieran McKenna as the head coach. After being assistant coach at Manchester United, he took the plunge in League One where he was the manager of Ipswich Town and eventully took them back to the Premier League after securing back-to-back promotions from the second-division to the English top-flight.
4. Graham Potter
A more obvious candidate as Graham Potter has been in and aroud English football for most of his career. He worked his way up the ladder and was a key force behind Brighton and Hove Albion’s rise to become a mid-table side in the Premier League. While his stint with Chelsea might not have panned out as expected, many regard Potter to be a respectable choice.
3. David Moyes
Now this choice could get a lot of the fans excited. David Moyes has been in and around the Premier League for practically his entire career. With almost two decades worth of experience in the United Kingdom, maybe a switch to international management could be the play. While his most recent stint with West Ham might have ended on a sour note, it is to be noted that he led the Hammers to their second European title by winning the conference league. A respected name among the football circle and experience of having worked with young and experienced players, he could be the man for the job.
2. Thomas Tuchel
Another name that has come out in the rumour-mill is the former Chelsea, Bayern Munich and PSG manager, Thomas Tuchel for the England job. His quality with regards to management is not exactly questionable as he has won titles with every club he has been a part of since his initial stint with Stuttgart. He has shown the ability to cope with the pressure of expectations and occasionally going past it as well, like when Chelsea went on to win the Champions League.
1. Pep Guardiola
What could be a fantasy pick, could indeed become a reality considering that Pep Guardiola’s contract with Manchester City runs out at the end of the ongoing season. The Spaniard is undoubtedly the best manager of the modern generation and has created a dominant force with Manchester City. But times change, as Guardiola, who has won practically everything with every club he has been with, could look to the international stage to complete his dominance across football.
