Kung Fu Panda 4 Beats Dune: Part Two For Second Straight Weekend With $30 Million Collection
Eight years after the third film came out, Kung Fu Panda 4 finally hit theatres around the world.

After a wait of eight years, the Kung Fu Panda makers finally released the fourth installment, bringing another addition to the franchise and showing Po on his spiritual journey. Co-directed by Mike Mitchell and Stephanie Ma Stine, Kung Fu Panda 4 sets the tone for how Po after becoming the Dragon Warrior must now find the best successor after him as he prepares to graduate into the Valley of Peace. While the film did leave a considerable impression on audiences, it has also managed to beat Dune: Part 2 at the box office by bringing home a second-weekend gross of about $30 million.

According to studio statistics, Dune: Part 2 is expected to earn $29.1 million in its third weekend, bringing its box office total to $205.3 million, while Kung Fu Panda 4 is also faring decently with critics, bringing its box office total to $107.7 million domestically.

Both the films continue to remain at the top of the North American box office in its second weekend in theatres.

This comes at a time when several other big movies have also arrived in more than 1,000 theatres this weekend including Arthur The King, The American Society of Magical Negroes, and Love Lies Bleeding. However, the chart still continues to belong to franchises including Dune 2 and Kung Fu Panda 4.

Kung Fu Panda and Dune: Part Two in Close Race for Top Spot

While the DreamWorks Animation production is looking forward to making a second-weekend gross of over $30 million following its impressive $57.9 million opening, its debut number is not too far from the original Kung Fu Panda’s box office opening ($60.2 million).

In the meantime, the fourquel has surpassed the $100 million gross through the three-day frame, making it the second title of the year to notch that milestone.

On the other hand, Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two is expected to remain in second place after making $8.1 million on Friday, which is just 33 per cent down from a week ago. The sci-fi, however, remains the leading box office grosser of the year and was expected to reach $200 million domestically by the end of the weekend.
