Zachary Levi Starrer Harold And The Purple Crayon's First Look Is Out
Zachary Levi starrer Harold and the Purple Crayon is based on the 1955 children’s picture book of the same name.

The first look of the much-awaited film Harold and the Purple Crayon is finally out. On March 14, actor Zachary Levi, who will play the lead role in the fantasy drama, shared the film’s two posters on Instagram. He captioned the post, “We about to paint this town PURPLE, y’all! Hittin’ theaters this August! Crayon those calendars!!!”

The movie is set to be released in theatres by Sony Pictures on August 2 this year. Directed by Carlos Saldanha and with the screenplay by David Guion and Michael Handelman, the film promises to be an engaging cinematic experience.

As its name suggests, Harold and the Purple Crayon is based on the 1955 children’s picture book of the same name. The famous book, written and illustrated by Crockett Johnson, centers around four-year-old boy Harold who has a magical purple crayon. Whatever, Harold draws with this crayon comes to life. It appears that in the film, Levi will play the grown-up Harold. As per the posters, the tagline of soon to the released film is: “Everything he draws is about to get real.”

Alongside Levi in the lead role, the live-action fantasy film will have the ensemble cast of Lil Rel Howery, Camille Guaty, Zooey Deschanel, Tanya Reynolds, Jemaine Clement, Pete Gardner, Jemaine Clement, and Ravi Patel.

The feature film adaptation of Harold and the Purple Crayon was first announced in early 2021. However, the film saw multiple delays. As per Comic Book Resources, originally the film was set to release on January 2023, this date was pushed to June 30, 2023, before being finalised for August 2, 2024.

Over the years, Harold and the Purple Crayon turned into multiple small animated short films in 1959, 1971, and 1974. As per ComicBook.com, at some point, director Steven Spielberg and actor Will Smith were involved in adapting the book on the big screen but dropped the project.

In 2001, the books from the series were adapted into a 13-episode television series for HBO. The series was narrated by Sharon Stone and featured Connor Matheus as the voice of Harold. The HBO series won a Daytime Emmy Award for Main Title Design. It was also nominated for an Annie Award and Humanitas Prize.

So far there are 10 books in the Harold and the Purple Crayon series. The 10th book of the series, Harold’s Treasure Hunt was published in 2020. It was published posthumously. Crockett Johnson passed away on July 11, 1975.
