Add to that a good dose of protein and healthy fats and it's no surprise that avocado oil has become a super popular ingredient in beauty products! Use it to make hair or face masks; you could even rub some into old scars to help them fade or use it to help treat breakouts. Just make sure to test a little bit of oil on your skin first to make sure you aren't allergic to it.

Making a Hydrating Hair Mask

Melt the coconut oil if it's in a solid form. Coconut oil has a really low melting point of 76 °F (24 °C), which makes it easy to melt down to a liquid form. Put 2 teaspoons (9.9 mL) of coconut oil into a small, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave it for 10 seconds. Coconut oil is a nourishing ingredient that will add a natural shine to your hair.

Smash a ripe avocado in a small bowl. Cut the avocado in half vertically and remove the pit. Scoop out the flesh of the avocado and put it into a small mixing bowl. Use a fork or spoon to mash the avocado until it is a smooth consistency. This is a great way to use up an avocado that is about to turn bad! Instead of throwing it away, add it to a hair or face mask.

Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and whisk them together. Add the 2 teaspoons (9.9 mL) of coconut oil and 2 teaspoons (9.9 mL) of avocado oil to the bowl with the smashed avocado. Use a fork or a whisk to mix everything together. You could also blend the ingredients together in a food processor to make a really smooth mask.Tip: For an aromatic addition to your hair mask, add 4 to 5 drops of your favorite essential oil. Lavender is soothing, rosemary promotes hair growth, and cedar wood helps with dandruff.

Apply the mask to hair that is dry or damp. If your hair tangles easily, get it slightly wet before applying the mask. Scoop a small amount of the mask out of the bowl with your fingers and start putting it on your hair at the roots. Work your way down the middle shafts all the way through to the ends. If you're having a hard time spreading the mask over your hair, try using a wide-toothed comb to help disperse it more evenly. Put a towel over your shoulders to protect your clothes from the mask.

Cover your hair and let the mask do its work for 20 to 30 minutes. Use a towel or a shower cap to cover your hair and keep it off of your clothes and furniture. If it helps, use a hair clip to gather your hair on top of your head first so it stays up better. Set a timer, sit back, and relax while the mask does its hydrating work. Take the time to do some other fun self-care tasks, like doing a face mask, painting your nails, or enjoying a cup of green tea.

Rinse the mask out with warm water and shampoo your hair as usual. After the 20 to 30 minutes have passed, go ahead and wash your hair like you normally would. Spend a little extra time massaging your roots to make sure you've rinsed away all the avocado and oil. You can skip using conditioner, as the avocado mask will have already conditioned your hair.

Applying a Moisturizing Face Mask

Mash 1 ripe avocado in a small bowl. Cut open an avocado vertically and remove the pit. Scoop the flesh out into a small mixing bowl and use a fork or spoon to mash it up so it becomes one consistency. The skin of an avocado is really thin, so be careful when you're cutting into it that you don't accidentally slice your hand.

Add 1 teaspoon (4.9 mL) of avocado oil to the bowl with the mashed avocado. Measure out the avocado oil and whisk together the mixture until the two ingredients are completely combined. If needed, use a spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl as you mix. You could also add 1 teaspoon (4.9 mL) of honey or a few drops of essential oils to your face mask.

Apply the mask to your entire face. Start with a clean face, so if you were wearing makeup or just got back from the gym, give your face a quick wash and pat it dry. Then, scoop up the mask with your fingers and spread it all over. Make sure to get your forehead, nose, chin, cheeks, and around the sides of your eyes. If you want to, you could even put the mask on your upper neck. You can actually use avocado oil to clean away any makeup, dirt, oil, and impurities on your skin.

Let the mask absorb into your skin for 10 to 15 minutes. Set a timer and relax while your mask does its work. Watch a TV show, take a bath, or listen to some of your favorite music.

Rinse away the mask with warm water. After the 10 to 15 minutes have passed, wipe away the mask with a warm, damp washcloth. Make sure to get any remnants left on your hairline or around your ears.Tip: You can also use avocado oil by itself as a nightly moisturizer. Put about ⁄4 teaspoon (1.2 mL) onto your fingertip and massage it into your skin after you've washed your face before bedtime. Rinse it off in the morning when you wake up.

Using Avocado Oil for Other Beauty Needs

Massage avocado oil into your nail beds and cuticles to keep them soft. Pour about ⁄2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) of avocado oil into a small bowl. Dip the tip of your index finger into the oil and massage it into the nail beds on the opposite hand. Repeat on the other hand. Do this once per week. Avocado oil will quickly absorb into your skin, helping make your nails stronger and shinier.

Rub avocado oil over old scars to soften their appearance. Use the tip of your finger or put a little bit of oil on a cotton ball. Rub the oil into scarred skin once per day to help reduce its visibility. This can even work with old acne scars on your face!

Apply avocado oil to sunburnt skin to help it rehydrate and heal. Avocado oil has anti-inflammatory properties, which means it can help calm down skin that has been irritated by too much sun exposure. Simply massage a small amount of oil onto the infected area once or twice per day until the sunburn has healed. It can also help prevent excessive flaking and peeling because it does such a great job at rehydrating and moisturizing your skin.

Use a dab of avocado oil on breakouts to help clear your skin. Put a little dab of avocado oil over acne breakouts before you go to bed. In the morning, wash your face like you normally would. The avocado oil will hydrate your skin without making it oily, and its anti-inflammatory properties can help calm irritated and red skin. Avocado oil will also make your face feel really soft, so that's an added bonus.

Make a scented moisturizer to enjoy using all day long. In a small plastic or glass container with a lid, combine 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of avocado oil, 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of another carrier oil, and 2 to 3 drops of an essential oil. Mix them together and use this moisturizer whenever your skin starts feeling a little dry. Coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, and olive oil are a few popular natural carrier oils. A carrier oil is used to dilute essential oils while also being good for your skin. Lavender and frankincense are oils that help hydrate dry skin, but you can add any kind that you like.Warning: Be careful to always dilute your essential oils and use them as directed. They are very concentrated and can cause a reaction if they aren't diluted before being used on skin.
