How to Organize a Utility Closet
How to Organize a Utility Closet
Utility closets tend to attract a lot of junk, making it hard to find what you need - and the prospect of getting it straightened out can seem daunting. By clearing out the closet thoroughly, instituting a practical system for storing what you need, and regularly maintaining that system, you can get your closet organized and keep it that way.
Steps

Storing Large Cleaning Tools

Declutter the closet. Throw out anything you don’t need. Use a feather duster to clean out any cobwebs. Wipe down the shelves and baseboards; and vacuum the floor.

Hang large, clumsy items. You can hang brooms, mops, stepladders and so on from hooks on the walls or door. That way they won't fall down every time you open the closet.

Store bulky items on the floor of the closet. The floor spaces should be reserved for tall and/or heavy items that you can't hang up. These might include your vacuum cleaner or trash can.

Installing Organizers

Make the most of vertical space. You can massively increase the storage potential of your closet by installing shelves. If some of the shelving is too high to reach easily, use it to store the items you use least often.

Mount hanging storage. You can make better use of space by hanging items from the walls of the closet, the inside of the door, or the underside of your shelves. Affix hooks, clips and pegs to maximise your space. A towel bar affixed to the door can be used to air out damp cleaning rags. If you have a lot of small tools or other items, you could install a pegboard and use it to store as many hooks as you need. A hanging caddy, like an over-the-door shoe organizer, provides lots of storage.

Install a single drawer. A solo drawer placed on the floor of the closet can be used to tidy away items that don't fit elsewhere. Avoid placing a whole unit of drawers here, however, as it could take up too much room and/or attract excessive junk to your closet.

Storing Smaller Everyday Items

Sort items by category. Buy or source bins, boxes or baskets to store your smaller items like tools, paint brushes and cleaning supplies. Keep similar items together.

Label your storage. This will make it easier to find what you’re looking for and to return items to their proper place. You can find many creative and attractive labels online: it's a good idea to make your labels easy to replace.

Store batteries where you can find them. Batteries tend to accumulate at the bottom of junk drawers, and it is often a challenge to find the right sized battery when you need it. You can buy purpose-built battery storage racks to keep your assortment of batteries neat and accessible.

Hang up your spray bottles. You can hang them by the neck from a towel bar. Alternatively the slots in a hanging caddy are the perfect size for bottles of cleaning spray. Using a clear plastic caddy will make it easier to find the spray bottle you're looking for.
