CHENNAI: Touted as the first of its kind in India, a 150-bed palliative care centre is to be inaugurated in the Sri Venkateshwara Dental College Campus in Thalambur on Monday.Conceptualised and built by Vel’s Charitable Trust, the Shri Isari Velan Mission Hospital is named after founder Dr Isari K Ganesh’s father on the occasion of his 25th death anniversary. Palliative medicine, which aims to relieve suffering and improve the quality of life for those with terminal illnesses, is considered a relatively obscure part of medical care in India. To bring this type of care to those who need it, but cannot afford it, the hospital offers free treatment. Addressing the media at a press conference here on Saturday, Dr Ganesh said, “Palliative care is a required part of treatment for those whose illnesses cannot be cured. The hospital is open not just for cancer patients, but for anyone in their last throes of life. Here they will receive food, accommodation, treatment and nursing free of cost.”The 10-acre hospital, built at a cost of `9 crore, has plenty of open space, an open air theatre, a temple, a church and a mosque apart from a room for indoor games and a library, said Dr Ganesh. Of the 150 beds, 100 will be free; 50 will be special suites for those who can afford the treatment. Provisions have been made for 50 attenders to stay at the hospital as well. The hospital is set to be inaugurated by Chairperson of the Cancer Institute Dr V Shanta.
