2 held for allegedly raping MBA grad in Pune

Pune: An MBA graduate was allegedly gangraped by three people in Pune on Thursday.

Pune Police have registered an FIR in Hinjewadi police station against the three persons and have arrested two of them.

Those arrested have been identified as Ranjeet Shahaji Gade (25) and Ganesh Uttam Kamle (26). One of the accused Subhash Heeralal Bhonsle is still absconding.

"The victim was standing at the bus stop. The two (Ranjeet Shahaji Gade and Ganesh Kamle) were on their way to perhaps service their cars. When these two saw her standing they offered to drop her. She got in. But soon after the driver and his associate changed their mind," said Deputy Commissioner of Pune Dr Mahesh Patil.

"They took a detour and picked up another friend (Subhash Heeralal Bhonsle, who is now absconding) and kept roaming around the city from 4 PM to 12 in the night. They collectively threatened the victim to kill her if she tried to alert anyone. Later they took her to open space in Hinjewadi and one by one allegedly raped her in the car," added Patil.

The victim had gone out for an interview and was travelling in a hired taxi at 4:30 pm from Wakad area in Pune.

She has alleged that she was raped by three persons who were travelling in the same cab.

She was later left by the three accused at a desolate place where some passersby noticed her on Friday morning who informed the police.

The girl, who is married, is from Nagpur and had come to Pune looking for a job. Police have admitted her to YB Chavan Hospital and say her medical report is awaited.

Pune is considered as one of the safest cities for women, but it has seen a number of rape cases recently.

In October 2009 last year, a 28-year-old woman was raped and murdered by two cab drivers and a security guard on her way home.

Then in August 2009, a software engineer met a similar fate. Her colleague was arrested for the committing the crime.

In August 2008, a 22-year-old call centre employee was allegedly gangraped by 10 men including the cab driver in the city while a 21-year old woman working with another call centre was raped and murdered allegedly by a cab driver in November 2007.
