TIRUNELVELI/NAGERCOIL/THANJAVUR: An infant from Radhapuram Taluk in Tirunelveli district died of dengue fever on Saturday taking the toll in the district to 28. A silver lining, however, was that the district did not report any deaths on Sunday, according to a senior health department official. But Nagercoil was not that lucky as a 5-month-old girl baby died of suspected dengue fever at a private hospital on Sunday.Tirunelveli health officials said that 11-month-old Sundarapandi of Chidambarapuram in Radhapuram Taluk in Tirunelveli district, was admitted to the Government Medial College Hospital, Asaripallam, on Saturday where he died. While the influx of patients with symptoms of dengue to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital had been at least 60 every day till recently, the numbers have dwindled to somewhere between 40 and 50 by Saturday, the senior health official said.He said the number of fresh infection had been reduced and the awareness created by the health department had led to more people with fever rushing to the hospital ward to get themselves tested.A TVMC staff said that till Sunday afternoon, around 10 children were admitted to the dengue ward. Most of the children were from Tenkasi, Ambasamudram and Kadayam areas.Beds have been put up in corridors and passages to accommodate the rising number of patients getting admitted. Nagercoil health officials said that Boomiga, daughter of Murugan of Unnamalaikadai, was affected with fever and was getting treatment at a private hospital at Marthandam for three days. She was taken to another private hospital in Nagercoil for further treatment and was admitted there on May 26. She was not responding to treatment and died on Sunday.
