Two teenaged boys drowned in an artificial pond in Fattepur Gohi village on the outskirts of the Kanpur city, the police said.
Locals alleged that the pond in which the tragedy occurred had been created as a result of illegal digging for earth by unauthorised parties who had left the ditch unfilled.
According to police, some children from the village had gone for a swim in the pond on Sunday evening when one of them, Sushil (14), started drowning.
But as the rest of the group struggled to rescue him, they too started drowning. Hearing their cries a passerby rushed to the spot and managed to rescue three children.
However, Sushil, and another boy, Rajan (13), had drowned by then. Police later arrived on the spot and fished out the bodies. Investigations are on to identify those behind the digging of the ditch, the police said.
