KOZHIKODE: Two women swapped kidneys to save the life of the other’s husband. The couples were incompatible with each other for kidney transplant as they had different blood groups. Vibeesh, 38 of Nenmini, Guruvayoor and Musthafa, 38, Kunnamangalam were saved when Vibeesh’s wife Pilly (31) donated her kidney to Musthafa and Musthafa’s wife Sakkeena (30) donated her kidney to Vibeesh.The two families were brought together by the transplantation counselling department of the hospital, to create awareness about organ transplantation, after the two wives came forward to donate their kidney to husbands. The blood group of Vibeesh whose blood group is ‘B Positive’ but his wife Pilly’s is ‘A Positive’. In case of Musthafa whose blood group is ‘A Positive’ wife Sakkena’s is ‘B Positive’. After counselling, the two wives agreed to swap their kidney as there are no legal issues and could save two lives.The MIMS Hospital made arrangements to conduct the four surgeries including two transplantation surgeries simultaneously. The operations which conducted on January 24 were successful and the two persons got discharged from the hospital on Thursday.Dr Sajith Narayanan, Nephrologist, said this was a first-of-its-kind of swapping transplant in Kozhikode. The four surgeries were conducted in a duration of 12 hours, he added. Dr Ismail, Dr Banil Hafeeq, Dr Harigovind, Dr Prasanth, Dr Ashiq Jindal, Dr Moni, Dr Kishore, Dr Rekha and Dr Sreelatha led the surgeries.
