Vocalist Nisha Rajagopal is a musician who has been under the tutelage of eminent masters like Vidwan P S Narayananswamy and Suguna Varadachari. She has been rising to the top because of her undying passion for music. There is a certain amount of dignity in her music. Though she does not have a flamboyant voice, she has a sweet and sensuous one. There is no aggressiveness in her singing and for her, music flows naturally. This was very evident when Nisha Rajagopal performed at the concert for the Ananthaswamy Centre for Carnatic music at the Dakshinamoorthy Auditorium in Mylapore. Her refreshing delivery of notes in Raga Bilahari (Kanugomtini Sri Ramuni) of Thyagaraja, reflective of the feature of rigorous music, was noteworthy. The Raga Subha Pantuvarali (Ennalu Oragae) in Tripuda Thalam of Thyagaraja, was presented with considerable classical strength. The voice was good enough to touch Tarasthayi Panchama but the tempo did not go well with the ornamentation she was trying to embellish the song with. The recital gained momentum when she delineated Raga Kambodhi (Evari Mata) of Thyagaraja. We found merging of Raga Bhava with Sahithya Bhava and she succeeded in her presentation, which was skillfully handled, in all the three octaves, with compelling session of niraval and swara prastharas. MNB Rajeev on violin gave a good account of himself, while B Sivaraman on the mridangam embellished the recital by his adroit playing.
