In an initiative to boost tourism in Ernakulam by tapping into its backwater potential, the Tourism Department in association with Kumbalam Panchayat is all set to launch a ‘Backwater tourism’ project based on recreation activities’ at Kaithapuzha Lake, near Panangad.
A mini marina will be set up near the fish landing area and a yachting centre near bus terminal, both at Panangad, according to the officials working with the project. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 8 crore. The mini marina will have facilities to accommodate house boats which will ply to Kumarakom lake. Various water sports activities will be organised at mini marina.
However, the main attraction of the project is one -and-half kilometre walkway along the Kaithapuzha lake. The government tourism consultant and the co-ordinater of the project Murali Menon said that the walkway will connect the mini marina with the yachting centre.
“The walkway has been named ‘romantic pathway’ and this is going to be the central tourism attraction of the district. The lake has more width compared to the other backwaters in Kerala. It will be visual treat for the tourists and the local vistors, even better than that of Marine Drive,” he said.
Moreover, there will be a recreation centre at Cheppanam near Panangad. “The Kudumbashree units will be allowed to run the business as the project of the Kumbalam panchayat Agri village is based on sustainable tourism,” he said.
He added that once the project is implemented more tourists will be attracted to the Kumbalam.
“Our backwater tourism has not been explored to its full potential. Tourists are fed up with the inactive tourism as there are hardly any activities. This project envisages lot of activities ashore. The place can be made as a major backwaters tourism hub apart from that at Alappuzha.”
The officials also said that the Government has given sanction to the project and fund will be allotted by the tourism department.
However, the project is considering a private investment of Rs 500 crore, which was proposed in the Emerging Kerala meet by the Kumbalam panchayat and Ernakulam sailors association.
Kumbalam panchayat AJ Joseph said that , after the completion of the project, the mega project of Rs 500 crore will be launched in the panchayat. “We hope that the mini marina will attract more investors. Fifty other panchayats will be connected to the mini marina though the Vembanad lake. The other features of the project are water taxis and home stays.
