THODUPUZHA: The CPM has landed in the soup yet again with the blunt declaration made by the Idukki district party secretary MM Mani that the party had committed political murders in the past. “The party is in the habit of doing away with its rivals who are in its hit list,’’ Mani said while addressing a party meeting at Manacakkad near here on Friday night.Mani has, however, tried to wriggle out of the logjam after his speech was telecast by the media sending shockwaves across the state and demands were made to book him for the provocative remarks. Mani told Express on Saturday that his speech was misinterpreted and that he had only mentioned about the party’s struggle in the past in Kerala. When contacted, KV Sasi, district secretariat member, confirmed the remarks made by Mani. Ebin Joseph, a party worker, said Mani had not said anything objectionable. The meeting dispersed about 8.30 pm, he said. But the video clippings of his speech, which were provided to the media by a local TV channel, leave no one in doubt as to what Mani said at the meeting which was called to clarify the party’s position in the wake of the murder of TP Chandrashekharan. Mani said the murder of Balan who killed Ayyappadas, a Peermedu party worker, was an example of  the party’s habit of finishing off rivals. The Congress was silenced  after the CPM prepared the list and did away with those who worked against the party in Shantampara. The first target was shot dead, another beaten to death and the third was stabbed to death. The ‘kadhar’ of the Congress was not to be seen thereafter. It had not been possible for the party to retaliate against all the killings of party comrades, he said. However, Mani said the party had no role in the murder of Chandrashekaran. If it was involved in the case, it would have no hesitation in owning up responsibility, he said.Mani also did not spare Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan for describing Chandrasekharan as a great communist. How can one become great by dividing a party, he asked.
