How many of us have our name as Gauri, Abhimanyu or Karan? Well we certainly would have heard these monikers in our circle or neighbourhood. But do we have any of our friends named Ghatotkacha or Menka? Indian baby names are inspired a lot by popular mythological characters, but rarely do we come across such unusual or rather exotic names which if used, won't sound that bad either.
Recently a survey done in the US suggested that HBO's hit series 'Game of Thrones' has inspired many parents to name their kids after the characters in the series. The sudden resurgence of medieval names is because of the popularity of such shows. Names like Khaleesi, Ned and Tyrion are becoming popular in the west and most of the parents are naming their new born babies after 'Game Of Thrones' characters.
So what if Indian babies had these exotic names from the epic Mahabharata? Here are 10 baby names that should make a comeback.
Yagyasaini: This was another name given to Draupadi, since she was born from fire-sacrifice. Parents usually don't name their daughter as Draupadi, but her synonym won't sound that bad either.
Parikshit: The meaning of this name is 'one who has been tested'. Parikshit succeeded Yudhisthira to the throne of Hastinapur.
Yuyutsu: Okay, so there's an interesting story behind this name. Yuyutsu was the son of Dhritrastra with a vaishya woman named Sukhada. Born under the fear that Ghandari won't be able to conceive, Dhritrastra made love to Sukhada and Yuyustsu came into existence. Apparently he was the only kaurava who survived the Kurukshetra war and took charge of Indraprastha. So all the accidental babies can be given this beautiful name, what say?
Ghatotkacha: He was the son of Bhima and giantess Hidimba. Ghatotkacha was considered to be a loyal and humble figure. Its literal meaning is to have a head like a jug. So imagine a cute, chubby toddler christened as Ghatotkacha, won't that be adorable?
Puru: He was one of the ancestors of the Pandavas. Puru means paradise.
Menka: So she was that angel, who managed to seduce saint Vishwamitra and break the penance undertaken by him. Menka was drop-dead gorgeous. This name sounds pretty interesting, isn't it?
Dhrishtadyumna: It means daring. This name was given to Draupadi's brother. It has something very chivalrous about it and a kid named Dhrishtadyumna is supposed to be filled with chivalry.
Shakuntala: She was the love child of Menka and Vishwamitra and was as beautiful as her mother. After her birth, Shakuntala was raised in the forest by birds and therefore she got this name.
Damayanti: She was the princess of Vidarbha kingdom during Mahabharata and was so filled with grace that even gods couldn't stop admiring her. Kids with this name are usually very creative.
Chitrasena: He was Arjun's music teacher. It was Chitrasena who meditated with Lord Indra after Urvashi cursed Arjun to remain a eunuch for life.
