Islamabad: At least six people were killed and seven others injured in a missile strike carried out by a suspected US drone in Pakistan's restive south Waziristan tribal region, hours after a senior-most American military official vowed to respect Islamabad's sovereignty.

Eyewitnesses and local residents were quoted by Dawn News channel as saying that at least four missiles were fired by the drone at two compounds in an area near Angoor Adda, where US ground forces had carried out a raid on September 3 that claimed 20 lives.

Official sources said six persons were killed and seven others injured in the attack, adding that some "high value targets" might have been among the dead.

The witnesses said they had heard drones flying over the area at the time of the attack.

The attack came hours after Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, reiterated America's commitment to respect Pakistan's sovereignty.

He also pledged his country's continued support to Pakistan.

Mullen, who is here on a two-day visit, met Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani for talks to review the regional security scenario.

He also appreciated the positive role that Pakistan is playing in the "war on terror", a statement issued by the US embassy here said.

Mullen stressed the need "to develop further US-Pakistani cooperation and coordination on critical issues that challenge the security and well-being of the people of both countries".

The statement described Mullen's meeting with top Pakistani civilian and military leaders as "extremely frank, positive and constructive."
