BANGALORE: Demanding better wages, regularisation of services, incentives for long working hours and job security, nearly 2,000 members of the Arogya Kavacha 108 Ambulance Employees Association will stage a state-wide protest on Wednesday. The members have alleged that GVK EMRI which is operating the 108 service in the state has received nearly Rs 220 crore from the government for its operation. However, the agency is just spending  Rs 2 to Rs 3 crore towards salaries of the workers. All the 2,800 workers associated with the 108 Ambulance including pilots (drivers) and emergency medical technicians (EMT) are entitled for a minimal wage of Rs 5,700. Speaking to The New Indian Express, vice president of 108 EMRI Ambulance Service M S Prakash said that the services of the workers should be regularised and the they should be considered as government employees under the Health Department. Besides, the extra time which is being spent by the pilots and EMT which is not considered should be considered as over time (OT). The members have planned to start the protest rally from Chikkalalbagh and march to Freedom Park where they will sit in dharna.
