Hyderabad: Andhra Police have recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition while conducting raids in West Godavari district to track down and arrest Maoist leaders.

Police recovered a large number of rocket launchers as well as 3,000 hand grenades.

Police said that the arms haul indicated that Maoists are trying to regain control in the state by using peaceful areas with no extremist activity to store arms.

"A place very close to Tanuku, which is Paidiparru village, which is supposed to be a very peaceful village - and, in fact, the entire West Godavari district don't have much extremist activity - such villages Maoists are using for conducting their clandestine operations by storing up arms dumps, and these arms dumps are very deadly, very deadly weapons, very deadly means of liquidating huge number of either security personnel or public at large," said Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police RR Girish Kumar.

The raids were conducted based on documents recovered from two top Maoist leaders, who were killed in a shootout last week.

Shakamuri Apparao and Kondal Reddy were killed following a gunbattle with the police in Prakasam and Warangal districts on March 12.
