Another bomb attack in Pondy
1 woman hurt in second incident in less than a week

Unidentified persons threw country-made explosives at a French citizen’s house at Thambunaikan Street in the heart of the town here, on Wednesday night. A 60-year-old woman, Sundarambal, who was sitting at a nearby shop suffered minor injuries from the nails.

The windows of the house broke in the blast. The occupants of the house were not in, when motorcycle-borne assailants threw two bombs and escaped in the cover of darkness.

The blast came amidst police claims of tight security ahead of Independence Day celebrations.

The attack is believed to be the outcome of a property dispute between family members.

Investigations are on. More details are awaited.

Wednesday’s incident is the second in recent times, which involved country-made bombs.

Rowdy killed

Notorious history-sheeter Jegan, who was serving a life term and lodged in the Karaikal sub-jail, was killed on the spot, when a gang hurled country-made explosives on a police vehicle ferrying him, on August 10.

The well-coordinated attack by a 10-15 member gang, took place in broad daylight at 4 pm on the Chunamber Bridge on the Puducherry-Cuddalore road, while the van was transporting Jegan after he was produced in a local court in Puducherry.

The attack was suspected to be from a rival group.

The gangster’s head was blown to bits by a country bomb that hit his face, according to the probe officer. Five policemen, including a sub-inspector and the driver of the vehicle, sustained injuries.
