HYDERABAD: The power crisis in the state is deepening. The thermal power stations have coal stocks that can last only for the next three days. After that, what? This is the big question now. Though chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy could persuade the Prime Minister and get 800 mw from Eastern grid (11 p.m. to 6 a.m.) and 200 mw (round the clock) from Haryana, it comes as no great comfort since the thermal stations are facing closure for want of coal and hydel generation kept on hold with inflows into reservoirs stopping altogether. Already, four-hour power cut is in force in the state capital, six hours in municipal corporations, municipalities, and eight hours in mandal headquarters and god knows how many hours in villages. There is power holiday for industries for three days a week besides peak hour cut for four hours at nights every day.The farm sector is getting power supply for between four and six hours. The farmers, who decide the political fortunes of the party in power, are angry as the crop is getting ready for harvesting in two months. APGENCO’s thermal stations are now generating only 3,000 MW as against the installed capacity of 5,093 MW. The coal stocks are fast depleting.NTPC Ramagundam has closed one unit of 550 MW capacity. The total loss of thermal generation to state on account of severe coal deficit is around 56 MU per day Inflows to Srisailam, which were 1.5 lakh cusecs on September 13, have now totally stopped. The hydel generation which was around 65 MU per day has now come down to around 39 MU per day. The coal production in SCCL has come down to 36,700 tonnes per day from 1.5 lakh tonnes taking the total loss of production to 17.2 lakh tonnes in the last 22 days of Sakala Janula Samme.
