Thousands gathered along the streets of the historic town of Tripunithura for a trip down memory lane on Tuesday as the Atham procession as part of the week-long ‘Athaghosham 2012’, was taken out in its pomp and show with various art forms and pomp and show.
After the flag-hoisting and the lighting of the lamp at Atham Nagar arranged in Tripunithura Boys High School Ground, ‘Lord Mahabali’ led the ceremonial parade through the narrow streets of the town.
The pageant was accompanied by caparisoned elephants and floats. Traditional folk and classical dance forms such as Theyyam, Kummatti kali, Kolkali, Mayilattom, Karakattom, Kummi, Poykal, Ammankudam, Pulikali, Kathakali, Atakavadi, Panjavadyam, Chendamelam added colour to the procession along with modern dance forms. Floats of contemporary issues such as female foeticide, alcohol abuse, Kothamangalam landslide, Shawarma and food poisoning and Mullaperiyar reflected the wide acceptance to the Atham procession. Moreover popular myths and legends of yore in the forms of gods and goddesses lent colour and meaning to the procession which lasted for over six hours.
Speaker G Karthikeyan, who inaugurated the procession, delivered the Onam message. He said that while we try to overcome the pain and grievances created by the natural calamities, the festivals bring back the harmony. “Over the centuries, Tripunithura has been following a grand tradition where the representatives of Muslims, Christians and others including fisherfolk celebrated Onam irrespective of caste, creed or colour. The message was to live in harmony. Hence we should continue these customs,” he said.During the occasion, the Speaker also inaugurated the website of Athaghosham. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob hoisted the Atham flag while the local MLA and Excise Minister K Babu presided over the function. Tripunithura municipal chairman R Venugopal and councillors spoke.
