CHENNAI: The National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organization, a division of the Department of Science and Technology, on Wednesday released an atlas of the freedom movement of India. The atlas maps the history of India between 1850, when the first war of Independence happened and 1950, when India became a republic. It throws light on the various places of importance during the freedom struggle.“We have worked it on a city-by-city basis. For instance Gandhi’s visit to Chennai has been mapped in accordance to the time, date and location on the map,” said P Nag, director of NATMO, at the Geo Summit-2011 organised by the Sathyabhama University. “It took one and a half years to prepare the map with only four researchers working on it. It will be extremely useful for the civil service aspirants,” he said.Swarna Subba Rao, Surveyor of India, said that the Delhi State Spatial Data Infrastructure (DSSDI) project, which was a huge success in Delhi, will soon be replicated across India including Chennai. The Project did a 3-D mapping of Delhi’s infrastructure above and below the ground, including cable connections and sewer lines and planning layouts. “The project has helped town-planners and government in reducing problems in constructing new structures or digging new sewer lines,” Rao said. The Survey of India, which has already mapped the entire country on a 1:50,000 scale is now undertaking a task of mapping it on a 1:10,000 scale. The mapping, entirely in a digital form, is being undertaken in association with the Department of Space.
