Attacks pre-planned: Mirwaiz
The moderate Hurriyat Conference said attacks on its leaders during their tour to various cities were pre-planned.

Srinagar: The moderate Hurriyat Conference on Wednesday said attacks on its leader during their tour to various cities were pre-planned and the Central government could not escape the blame for this.

"The government cannot escape the blame for attacks on us during our visit to various cities to apprise people about the ground reality in Kashmir," said Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the chairman of the Moderate Hurriyat.

Talking to reporters here on his return from Delhi, he alleged right wing activists carried out the attacks in the national capital, Chandigarh and Kolkata in a pre-planned manner.

"Even the police, which were deployed for security, were late in their response," the separatist leader said.

He said it was surprising that not a word was uttered against this by those who claim to be inheritors of Gandhian and Nehruvian legacies.

"We are less bothered about the attacks as some elements only wanted to create a one-minute news."

"We are more concerned about the silence maintained by political parties which swear by democracy and have vowed to uphold the freedom of expression," Mirwaiz said.

On the comments made by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah after the first attack on him at Chandigarh, he said "these do not deserve a reaction."

Omar had said the attack was a reaction to policies pursued by the Hurriyat Conference.

Mirwaiz said the awareness among the people about the Kashmir issue was very low.

This was because the government and political parties had presented Kashmir to them through Pakistani prism, he said.

The Hurriyat dove said his amalgam firmly believed in a negotiated settlement of the Kashmir issue among concerned parties - India, Pakistan and the leadership of Jammu and Kashmir.

"No one will benefit more than the people of India from resolution of the Kashmir issue. We are ready for talks, debate and discussions but the process has to be serious and result-oriented," he said.

What's your reaction?
