Audience is aam junta, says Zila Ghaziabad director
USP of Zila Ghaziabad is that it is targeting an audience who will get to watch a masala movie, says Anand Kumar.

New Delhi: Director Anand Kumar started his career with 'Delhi Heights' in 2007 and went on to make 'Jugaad' in 2010, he is returning to the silver screen with 'Zila Ghaziabad'. The film stars Vivek Oberoi, Arshad Warsi and Sanjay Dutt in pivotal roles. The director talks about the rumours and the process of filmmaking.

Q: What do you think is going to be the USP of 'Zila Ghaziabad'?

A: The USP of Zila Ghaziabad is that it is targeting to reach a larger audience who will get to watch a full-on masala movie which is based on some true incidents and partly fiction, weaved with lots of power-packed action and entertainment. I have exactly tried to make something which our audience love and have accepted each time when served on the screen.

Q: What made you cast Vivek Oberoi in such a character? What is the bone of contention between him and Arshad in the film?

A: Vivek's role is of an educated man therefore the look had to be not entirely rural unlike the other characters in the movie. They both play the roles of notorious mafia dons.

Q: What is the background of Sanjay Dutt's character?

A: Sanju sir's character was penned like this and is not inspired by any real life police officer. It is purely my writer Vinay Sharma's vision of how Pritam Singh should be. His character has shades of grey in it, so all I can say you haven't seen him in such a role in the past.

Q: Are you targeting any specific zone or age group for your film?

A: Target audience is aam janta and not handful of elites, at the end of the day what matters is box office results which is generated by the local masses who loves lots of masala, action, multi star-cast, powerful story line, melodious songs, I do not care much about the number of stars, I'd rather count the number of whistles in the theatre. I am very hopeful that it will run in North India for a quite some while.

Q: Is it like recreating the past with a distinct vision?

A: Surely, recreating the past and also keeping the contemporary taste of the masses in mind. Like the action sequences are very modern, item songs are still in vogue to add to some zing. I have done my job and now leave it for you.

There is a common belief after watching the trailers is that 'Zila Ghaziabad' might just be another out of 'Dabanng', 'Singham', 'Rowdy Rathore' template. 'Zila Ghaziabad' was shot in 2011 and there were delays in coordinating with the dates of so many actors during 2012, hence the completion took some while. Had it been released on time all would have said that 'Singham' and 'Rowdy Rathore' are made out of 'Zila Ghaziabad' template.

Q: We heard that you have edited out a song featuring Arshad Warsi and Minissha Lamba from the film.

A: The song was shot both on Arshad/Minissha and Vivek/Charmi. During the editing session Arshad's bit was looking completely out of place as his character turns out extremely notorious and a villain singing Ranjha Jogi wasn't making sense, so we had to chop it. However, the song is very much there which was shot on Vivek and Charmi. We can never possibly edit out the song sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghosal.

Q: 'Kai Po Che' is releasing with 'Zila Ghaziabad'

A: I am not insecure about that at all. These two movies are of different genres. The audiences are separate for both. I wish them luck for their movie also. Everyone puts in lots of hard work in their movie and each one has a right to earn profits as well as earn accolades from the audiences. 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' and 'Son of Sardaar' released together and both made 100 crore.
