Australian media slams Ponting for series loss
Australia lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy losing the series 2-0 against India.

New Delhi: Australian captain Ricky Ponting has come under fire in the Australian media for attempting to save himself from suspension for a slow over-rate rather than pushing for victory to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

While The Australian has predicted challenging times ahead for Ponting after his team lost 0-2 against India, The Age has blamed Punter for taking his eyes off the trophy.

The paper has further questioned his style of captaincy in the Nagpur Test and has called it "baffling".

The Herald Sun has quoted former captains as calling him "Captain Ordinary".

But Ponting himself defends his tactics in Nagpur saying he is disappointed with those who knew him also calling him selfish.

However, Sydney Morning Herald columnist and CNN-IBN's expert for the India-Australia series Peter Roebuk strongly believes Australia and Ricky Ponting should not be judged by the show in India.

He believes Australia will come out strongly and with better performances against other team.

"It's been one series in Indian conditions that the fellow weren't used to, to give them a little bit of leeway. I think back in Australia the pace attack will change and it will be a bit more competitive," Roebuk says.

"I think as Sunny (Sunil Gavaskar) said the batting is so strong. There's Hussey, Ponting and Michael Clark is going to get some runs and they bat a long way down. Although they have been beaten heavily in this series, I don't think in future they will be beaten badly by people. But I don't think they will be rolling them either. I think it will be hard for them, it's going to be tough for them but I am not going to write off Australians in terms of say the Ashes or even in terms of beating South Africa. I just think India were very, very good on their pitches and played very well and they were the better side," he says.

"But don't underestimate Australia against the other teams," adds.
