The Legislative Assembly saw uproar on Monday over the erection of banners and cutouts marking Chief Minister N Rangasamy’s birthday on August 4, with the opposition members questioning the government’s policies with regard to banners and cutout.
Leader of the opposition V Vaithilingam while speaking on the demand for grants, questioned the government on whether the ban was under implementation.
“If you respect the law take action by registering cases on those who have erected them and pull down the banners,” said Vaithilingam.
Alleging partiality, Vaithilingam said that the government had registered cases against those who had put up banners and cutouts to welcome Prime minister Manmohan Singh during his visit in the UT.
There should be a uniform policy for both ruling and opposition party members. Otherwise everyone should be able to put up banners and cutout and collect charges which will fetch revenue to the government.
Earlier AIADMK member A Anbazhagan said that cases were booked against AIADMK member Ravindran for putting up banners, while ruling party supporters were going scot free. He complained that the police, local administration, revenue, PWD are not taking action.
Purushottaman of AIADMK further said that on his birthday falling on the same August 4, he had advised his followers not to erect any banners.
Chief minister N Rangasamy intervened and said that the matter could be regulated in discussion with all MLAs.
