Bengal BJP Leader Sends Defamation Notice to TMC Minister Over 'Derogatory' Remarks, Demands Apology
BJP leader Pamela Goswami served a defamation notice to West Bengal Minister Shashi Panja for calling her a 'drug peddler'.

BJP leader Pamela Goswami served a defamation notice to TMC Minister Shashi Panja for calling her a ‘drug peddler’ after she joined the protest organised by the junior doctors against the RG Kar rape and murder case.

The BJP leader asked Panja to submit evidence of her being involved in any illegal activity and submit an apology within seven days.

Speaking to News18, Goswami said, “It’s a deliberate attempt by the TMC leader to defame me. If she doesn’t accept her mistake in the same way she made her obnoxious statement, we will take her to court.”

The TMC minister made the remarks on September 12 after Goswami’s images surfaced on social media showing her with the junior doctors during their sit-in protest outside the state’s Health Department headquarters in Saltlake.

What Panja Said on The BJP Leader

Trinamool Congress shared Panja’s remark from their official handle on X and wrote, “We are anguished by the tragic loss of our daughter, yet BJP leader Pamela Goswami, infamous for her drug arrest, appeared at the junior doctors’ protest. We urge the Junior doctors not to be swayed by their (BJP) theatrics. Continue your noble service to the people.”

Trinamool further accused Goswami of ‘politicising’ the RG Kar tragedy where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered on August 9. “The protest by junior doctors is apolitical. But BJP leaders have blatantly sought to exploit the RG Kar tragedy for political advantage, revealing their opportunistic nature.”

Goswami and two other persons were arrested by Kolkata Police on February 19, 2021, on charges of possession of cocaine. Following an investigation, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) stated that a narcotic substance was planted on her “due to animosity” and that she was subsequently discharged from the case as no evidence was found against her.
