Kolkata: The is no sign of a West Bengal undercover police officer and an NGO worker who went missing more than 72 hours ago in the state. Their families suspect they have been taken hostage by the Naxals.
Undercover officer Partha Biswas and activist Soumyajit Basu reportedly kept a tab on Naxal activities. They were last seen on Friday near Ayodhya hills in Purulia district of West Bengal.
Police have launched a search operation but made no breakthrough till now.
Reports say the abductors contacted the hostage's families but no ransom was demanded.
Biswas and Basu's families met West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in Kolkata asking him to intervene.
"The family members met the chief minister with appeals to bring them back. We are doing our best to get them back safe and secure," said West Bengal ADG (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha.
The state police have also contacted their Jharkhand counterpart for cooperation in the rescue operation, he said.
